Seven

There are seven pieces to Shopgirlove's costume, and the wardrobe mistress isn't done, yet..two of those pieces are on the head (although, much more creatively draped than pictured here.) Several of the pieces are unmentionables that seem to contribute to a, shall we say, robust silhouette? According to La Maitress de la garderobe, Shopgirlove should braid her hair. Oh the flashbacks!

The first snow

Well! Shopgirlove wasn't quite ready for it, but Global
Warming notwithstanding, it snowed! That is to say: it snowed, then it rained, then it turned cold and snowed again. Translation? Nasty, horrible slush for the morning commute and scary, treacherous ice patches covered by powder for the evening commute. Good times! King Dutch is a fan...hmmm, not so much.

My favorite winter tale, by far, has been the lassitude of peasants. Why not spend the bleccch asleep with your loved-ones and your stock and throw your dead on the roof until the thaw? Makes sense to me!

Shopgirlove loves lassitude!

Logistics

Okay, so seriously. Shopgirlove needs a fridge. I'm not sure how to go about buying a major appliance, since I never have. But I want one! Sears? Ebay? Craig's List? How, exactly, does one locate, purchase, and arrange for delivery of a food-conservation device?

Chez Nous

The apartment is empty but cozy. There is no wasted space at all. I didn't quite realize how not New England it was. We have no hallways. We have no foyer. We do have perfectly serviceable bedrooms and public areas. All the spaces are usable and welcoming. But the arrangements are spartan. This is the kind of apartment that two GIs would rent after the war. Buddies trying to regroup and find their way in the world post service and pre-real-life. It might be transitional. And yet, it has an allure. It is compact, clean, and convenient. Dutch seems happy. He likes to be able to tell what is going on in every corner of the place no matter where he is. He's much more relaxed, now. I think he like limits. And, it is very much quieter than what we were used to. We are on the third floor as opposed to the first. Quite a difference, really. We are only privy to crazy noise now instead of the quotidian intrusions. And I have access to an excellent restaurant. All in all, not so bad!

Well, Dutch and I are settled. There was a very funny moment a couple of days after we moved in when Shopgirlove was standing in the kitchen, looking around, thinking how large it was. (Call me Goldilocks.) She noticed a large square shape on the floor that was not the same color as the rest of the tile. Hmm, she wondered, what could explain that? Oh, perhaps a refrigerator? Many leases in Cambridge do not provide for this revolutionary appliance, but Shopgirlove has always found apartments with hand-me-down chillers. Not this time. Can you say "hello Sears"?

The building manager's a pip, at least.

Shopgirlove is sooo close. She found an apartment that will take King Dutch. Her extended probation is officially over at work. After tomorrow, she has no more performances until December. If she can just keep it all together for two more weeks, the ending should be a happy one. G'luck, Shopgirlove!

Free fall

Every once in a while you have to let go and let the Universe take care of you. I did. And life has been significantly better since I gave up any semblance of a conceit of control. Shopgirlove has no control. She is ok with that. So, I will take a trust-fall into the future and "Damned the torpedoes" or whatever the man actually said. The main lesson is, count off and outlive whatever crap life throws at you.
